Building Vocabulary: Colors, Family Members, Animals, and Common Objects
To start off, let’s learn some essential vocabulary words in Italian. Here are a few categories we’ll cover:
Colors
- Red: rosso
- Blue: blu
- Yellow: giallo
- Green: verde
- Pink: rosa
- Orange: arancione
- Purple: viola
- Brown: marrone
- Black: nero
- White: bianco
Family Members
- Mother: madre
- Father: padre
- Sister: sorella
- Brother: fratello
- Son: figlio
- Daughter: figlia
- Grandmother: nonna
- Grandfather: nonno
Animals
- Dog: cane
- Cat: gatto
- Bird: uccello
- Elephant: elefante
- Lion: leone
- Tiger: tigre
- Monkey: scimmia
- Rabbit: coniglio
- Dolphin: delfino

Common Objects

Nouns, Gender, and Number Agreement
In Italian, nouns have a gender (masculine or feminine) and must agree in number (singular or plural) with other elements in the sentence. Let’s see some examples:
- The red table: il tavolo rosso (masculine singular)
- The blue chairs: le sedie blu (feminine plural)
- A yellow car: una macchina gialla (feminine singular)
- Two black cats: due gatti neri (masculine plural)
🔈 Pro tip: Notice how the articles (il, le, una, due) and adjectives (rosso, blu, gialla, neri) change based on the gender and number of the nouns. Always memorize a new noun with its article (“il libro”, not just “libro”), so the gender sticks in your memory from the start!
🚩 Here’s the pattern:
- Masculine singular: -o (libro)
- Masculine plural: -i (libri)
- Feminine singular: -a (casa)
- Feminine plural: -e (case)
- Words ending in -e: can be either gender, plural -i (il padre → i padri, la madre → le madri)
Using Definite and Indefinite Articles
Definite and indefinite articles are used to indicate whether a noun is specific or non-specific. Here are the forms of articles in Italian:
Definite Articles (the):
- Masculine singular: il / lo (before s+consonant, z, gn, ps) / l’ (before vowel)
- Feminine singular: la / l’ (before vowel)
- Masculine plural: i / gli (before vowel, s+consonant, z)
- Feminine plural: le
Indefinite Articles (a/an/some):
- Masculine singular: un / uno (before s+consonant, z)
- Feminine singular: una / un’ (before vowel)
- Masculine plural (some): dei / degli (before vowel)
- Feminine plural (some): delle
🌟 Let’s practice using articles with nouns. For example, “I have a book.” would be “Ho un libro.” or “The chairs are red.” would be “Le sedie sono rosse.” or “I have some friends.” would be “Ho degli amici.”
Practice Exercise: Describe What You See
Look around the room and try to describe objects you see in Italian. Here’s a simple exercise:
- Pick an object and say its name in Italian: “un libro” (a book)
- Add a color: “un libro rosso” (a red book)
- Make it plural: “dei libri rossi” (some red books)
Try this with 5 different objects. This builds your noun-adjective agreement skills naturally!
